Mr. Coquí: The Story Behind the Sweatshirt Every Boricua Wants

Let’s Connect on Social

He's small. He's loud. He's home.

If you grew up in Puerto Rico, you know the sound before you can explain it. The sun goes down, the mountains get dark, and from every leaf and every garden: co-QUÍ, co-QUÍ.

The coquí is a frog small enough to sit on your thumb, and it is named after its own song. For millions of Puerto Ricans it means one thing: home. So when we decided to start a Sweaters category at 787 Coffee, there was only one character who could go first.

Meet Mr. Coquí.

Who is Mr. Coquí?

Mr. Coquí is the frog we have been drawing, painting and printing at 787 Coffee for years. He wears glasses, a 787 sweater and loafers. He is holding a coffee, because of course he is.

He is also a small piece of our story. 787 Coffee started in 2014 on our own farm, Hacienda Iluminada, in the mountains of Maricao, Puerto Rico. We grow, hand-pick and roast our own specialty coffee, and we carry that same island pride into every cup we pour. Café de aquí como el coquí: coffee from here, like the coquí.

The sweatshirt is Mr. Coquí's biggest moment yet.

Designed in New York City. Embroidered in New York City.

Our founder and artist, BrandON, designed Mr. Coquí in New York City, the same city where 787 Coffee grew from one coffee shop into a Puerto Rican specialty coffee company with locations across NYC, New Jersey, Texas and Puerto Rico. The same hands that paint the murals inside our cafés drew this frog.

We chose embroidery on purpose. Printing sits on top of a shirt. Embroidery goes into it. Every stitch of Mr. Coquí is sewn into the fabric, so he has texture, he catches the light, and he stays sharp wash after wash. The embroidery is done in New York City, and the sweatshirt itself is made in Brooklyn. That is what we mean by local.

How to wear it

The forest green does the work for you. Pair it with cream wide-leg pants and clogs for a coffee run, throw it over a collared shirt for the office, or wear it with jeans and sneakers on the plane back to the island. Two humans in matching Mr. Coquí sweatshirts is a whole mood, and that is why we shot it that way.

Where to get it

Mr. Coquí lives in two places:

  1. Online: Shop the Mr. Coquí Embroidered Crewneck Sweatshirt with free shipping on orders over $65.

A gift for anyone who misses the island

Every Boricua knows someone who lives far from home: a cousin in Orlando, a friend in Chicago, a parent who still says allá when they mean Puerto Rico. Mr. Coquí is the gift that says "I'm thinking of home" without a single word. It works for birthdays, Christmas, graduations or just because.
