Let’s Connect on Social

Hello Caffeinated Humans!

Some beverages do more than satisfy your thirst, they capture a piece of a culture’s soul. In Puerto Rico, the Piña Colada has become a symbol of our island identity. We asked ourselves: What if we could take that tropical tradition and transform it into an unforgettable coffee experience?

The result was Piña Colada Latte! It has now become one of the most demanded WOW lattes in our menu, and we hope YOU come to one of our locations and feel the summer vibes of our Piña Colada Latte.

The Story of a Tropical Icon

The Piña Colada's history is a lively one, with competing claims to its creation, but most stories lead to a single moment of genius. In the 1950s, as Puerto Rico was becoming a hot destination for world travelers, a bartender at the Caribe Hilton Hotel named Ramón "Monchito" Marrero was tasked with creating a signature drink that would capture the island's electric energy.

After months of experimentation, he perfected a sweet, creamy mixture of coconut, pineapple, and rum. The drink was an instant sensation, quickly becoming a favorite of celebrities and tourists alike, and cementing its place in pop culture.

It became so beloved that Puerto Rico officially declared it their national drink in 1978. While the original recipe included rum, we created our own rendition where you can pair a Piña Colada latte with our Rum infused coffee beans! it is a single origin specialty coffee bean from Mexico that has smokey cinnamon and dark chocolate notes, and is a perfect pairing with our signature WOW drink.

The Cultural Impact of Our “WOW” Drink

The Piña Colada's journey from a hotel bar to a global icon created a shared emotion to whoever drank it. In the1950s, the drink became a universal symbol of luxury, leisure, and the carefree spirit of a tropical vacation. It was the drink of movie stars and celebrities, used as a symbol of glamour that made everyone feel "cool" just by holding one. Legend has it that Hollywood star Joan Crawford herself declared it to be "better than slapping Bette Davis in the face," cementing its iconic status.

This tropical feeling was so infectious that it eventually transcended the bar and became a pop culture phenomenon. The 1979 hit song "Escape (The Piña Colada Song)" by Rupert Holmes solidified its place in history, forever linking the drink to a universal desire for adventure and escape. Today, the song is still featured in movies and TV shows, and a reminder of the drink's enduring relevance.

For us, the decision was simple. We wanted to carry a powerful, shared story. By taking this globally beloved iconic drink and infusing it with our authentic, single-origin specialty coffee. We wanted to innovate and not only do something different, but also sharing a piece of our heritage in a way that feels both new and comfortingly familiar.

How Piña Colada Latte became THE summer drink

The way that Piña Colada Latte was created at 787 coffee was that in June of 2024 it was the 70th anniversary of our beloved national Puerto Rican drink. It was the perfect moment to pay tribute to the cherished history this drink has done for Puerto Rico, and give it a new life in our coffee shops, we spent weeks testing our Piña Colada sauce until we found the perfect mix of flavors. What we discovered:

A Flavor Profile Breakdown

Each sip is a trip to Puerto Rico with these complementary flavors:

  • Tropical Coconut Creaminess: A smooth foundation that immediately sets the tone and provides a comforting sweetness.

  • Pineapple Brightness: A vibrant burst of zesty pineapple that cuts through the creaminess and makes the flavor truly pop.

  • Puerto Rican Espresso: A jolt of energy that elevates this WOW drink, balancing the sweetness with its dark chocolate and buttery notes that brings the "coffee" to life.

How to make Ice Piña Colada Latte

Step 1: Grind Up the Magic

Begin by grinding your coffee beans, if not grounded, we recommend you using our MOST popular Rum infused coffee beans! it is a single origin specialty coffee bean from Mexico that has smokey cinnamon and dark chocolate notes

This is the ultimate combo with the Piña Colada sauce, and you can get the full 787 specialty coffee shop experience at home!

Step 2: Dial in the Grind

Make sure your grinder is set to a fine espresso setting. You want your grind to feel a little like powdered sugar. get your portafilter and get those grinds!

(787 Baristas use 17.5 of Grounded coffee)

Too coarse = watery espresso. Too fine = bitter. Just right? Chef’s kiss

Step 3: Pack It Down

Once your coffee grounds are in the portafilter, it’s time to tamp!

If you have a manual tamper gently apply 30 lbs of pressure of the coffee down with your tamping tool until it’s nice and flat. Not too hard, not too soft, but just right.

Have your portafilter leveled on a table, and when you pressed down. Make sure your arm is making a right angle to push down on portafilter

AVOID USING WRIST AT ALL TIMES

Now lock the portafilter into your espresso machine, hit the extraction button, and let the magic happen!

Step 4: Extract Your Espresso

Start extracting a double shot of espresso, of your favorite coffee

At 787 coffee out double shot of espresso is (50 ml)

Step 5: Add That Piña Colada Sauce

Pour 30 ml of our homemade Piña Colada sauce into a jigger or a tiny measuring glass

If you have neither of those appliances (30 milliliters (ml) is roughly equivalent to 2 tablespoons)

Step 6: Stir it up

Find your favorite cup, and pour in your espresso (Soooo YUMY).

Pour your Piña Colada sauce over the espresso, then find either a straw, utensil, or anything long enough to mix the Piña Colada sauce and espresso.

Once it it poured you can swirl your cup around to mix the espresso.

(Swirl it 5 times)

Let the aromas and creama integrate harmoniously to release the best flavors

Step 7: Ice, Ice Baby

After that fill your glass half full of ice. To keep it at a cool refreshing temperature, and leaving enough room to mix your milk

Step 8: Pick Your Milk, Make It Yours

Finally it’s, all coming together! select YOUR choice of either dairy or non-dairy milk. Pour it into your cup and fill it to your liking

Step 9: The Final Act

Lastly either with your straw or utensil give your latte that final mix and Taa Daa! watch how the ingredients come together to create a delicious Piña Colada latte. Hope YOU enjoy!
