Coffee farming is one of the most important and intense parts of the coffee industry. It takes a lot of patience and knowledge to keep the coffee plantation healthy. Women are playing vital roles in this labor around the world, but their contributions have often gone unnoticed. Today, women farmers are taking on leadership roles, managing their own farms, and advocating for sustainability and innovation in the coffee farming industry
A great example of this is Aida Batlle. She is a coffee farmer and roaster in El Salvador who is recognized for her work in specialty coffee. Aida has revolutionized the way coffee is grown by creating cascara and experimental processing techniques to bring great quality specialty coffee with sustainability. Her farms in El Salvador produce some of the world’s finest coffee, and her commitment to letting people around the world understand the real value of coffee and how impactful it is to practice sustainable practices has made her a leader in the movement for more ethical, environmentally conscious coffee production.

Women in Barista Championship
The Barista Championship is a super exciting competition that opens the door to innovation, art, and flavor! Bringing together baristas from all over the world to showcase their skills, creativity, and love for coffee! During the competition, baristas have to make 4 espressos, 4 cappuccinos, and 4 signature drinks in just 15 minutes in front of expert judges. It's not just about making drinks fast, but also about sharing a deep passion for coffee and spreading that love to other humans. It's all about celebrating the art and flavor of coffee!
A great example of this is Andrea Allen won the Barista Championship in 2020. Her passion for coffee has driven her to create impressive coffee drinks and amazing innovations. She is the co-founder of Oxy Coffee Lab, which offers caffeinated humans a special coffee experience with amazing quality!
Women as Coffeepreneurs
The coffee shop is the final destination of coffee and is where the magic begins! Coffe shop have become so important in many communities and is the place where all the hard work of farmers, roasters, and baristas shows in a cup of coffee! Women have long been the face of coffee shops as baristas, but more and more women are owning and managing their own coffee businesses. These women entrepreneurs are creating innovative spaces that combine coffee culture with social change.
Amazing example of this is Rachel Peterson, co-owner of Hacienda La Esmeralda in Panama, one of the world’s most famous coffee farms, known for producing the Geisha coffee. Rachel has not only contributed to the farm’s global success but her farm is known for its sustainable labor practices, making Hacienda La Esmeralda a model of sustainability and social responsibility!
In the other hand we have Phuong Tran who was a barista champion in 2005 and later owned the Lava Java coffee shop! She continues to share her amazing knowledge of coffee as the Director of Coffee Education, impacting others with her expertise. Phuong explains that baristas train two, three, or more times a day, and six or seven days a week to prepare for a competition. It's important to remember to maintain a good quality of life in order to succeed!
