The Best Coffee Shop in the East Village NYC — And the Hurricane That Made It the Most Important Cup We Have Ever Poured

Let’s Connect on Social

787 coffee among gthe 100 best coffee shops in north america and the caribbean 2026

There is a corner of the East Village that knows 787 Coffee before 787 Coffee knew itself.

131 East 7th Street. Between Avenue A and First Avenue. The block where a Puerto Rican farm-to-cup coffee brand walked after a hurricane took almost everything — and found a community that did not just welcome them. A community that held them up while they rebuilt.

That is the 787 Coffee East Village flagship. That is where this story starts. And that is why — when judges from The World's 100 Best Coffee Shops evaluated over 4,600 coffee shops across North America, Central America, and the Caribbean and ranked 787 Coffee #3 in New York City — the first thought was not about the award. It was about East 7th Street. About the neighbors who became regulars before we even figured out our hours. About the community that decided we belonged here before we were certain of it ourselves.

If you are looking for the best coffee shop in the East Village in 2026 — you are already close to three of them. All 787 Coffee. All farm-to-cup. All farm-grown at Hacienda Iluminada in the highest mountains of Puerto Rico. And all carrying the story of what the East Village means to us — which is everything.

The Hurricane. The Farm. The Street That Saved Us.

In September 2017 Hurricane María made landfall in Puerto Rico as a Category 4 storm.

Hacienda Iluminada — 787 Coffee's family-owned farm in Maricao, Puerto Rico, at 3,000 feet above sea level in the island's central mountain range — was devastated. Coffee trees down. Infrastructure destroyed. The farm that was supposed to be the heart of the brand was fighting for survival at the same time the island was.

787 Coffee co-founders BrandON Ivan Peña and Sam Sepulveda faced a decision that no entrepreneur wants to face. The island was in crisis. The farm needed rebuilding. And the brand needed an anchor — a place to stand while the pieces were put back together.

That anchor was 131 East 7th Street. We now have 3 coffee shops in the East Village - 101 2nd ave and 159 2nd ave corner with E. 10th st.

The East Village location became more than a coffee shop. It became the proof of concept. The demonstration that 787 Coffee was still here. Still roasting. Still pouring. Still connected to the farm even while the farm recovered. Every cup sold on East 7th Street went back into rebuilding what María took.

The East Village community showed up. They ordered the Coquito Latte. They bought the Supremo Roast. They told their friends. They came back the next day and the day after that. They did not just drink the coffee — they funded the recovery of a Puerto Rican farm without knowing that is what they were doing.

Today Hacienda Iluminada is thriving. The trees that María knocked down are producing again. The honey processing beds are full. The single-origin Supremo Roast that powers every cup at every 787 Coffee location comes from that farm — the same farm the East Village helped save one cup at a time.

The community that stood by us is the reason we are ranked #3 in New York City. That is not a marketing claim. That is a debt we pay every morning by opening our doors and pouring the best cup we know how to make.

What Makes 787 Coffee the Best Coffee Shop in the East Village

The East Village has extraordinary coffee. Coffee Project New York is here. La Cabra opened here. Porto Rico Importing Co. has been on Bleecker since 1907. This neighborhood has been serious about coffee for longer than most specialty coffee brands have existed.

So what makes 787 Coffee the best coffee shop in the East Village in 2026?

The farm.

Coffee Project New York is extraordinary. La Cabra is extraordinary. Porto Rico Importing is a New York institution. But none of them grew the coffee in their cup. None of them own the farm where their beans were harvested. None of them honey processed their own beans in the Caribbean sun at 3,000 feet above sea level.

Less than 1% of coffee shops in the world own a farm. 787 Coffee is one of them.

Hacienda Iluminada in Maricao, Puerto Rico is where every Supremo Roast espresso begins its journey to your cup at 131 East 7th Street. From the volcanic soil of Puerto Rico's highest mountains to the portafilter in the hands of a trained 787 Coffee barista — every step of that journey is ours. No middlemen. No distributors. No warehouses between the farm and your cup.

That is what farm-to-cup means. And that is what makes the difference in every sip.

The WOW Lattes.

Every specialty coffee shop in the East Village has great espresso. 787 Coffee has great espresso AND handcrafted WOW Lattes that no other coffee shop in New York City — or the world — makes the way we make them.

🥥 Coquito Latte — invented by 787 Coffee. The viral Puerto Rican espresso drink made with handcrafted Coquito WOW Sauce — real coconut, warm holiday spices, natural sweetness — combined with Supremo Roast double espresso. The East Village's favorite latte that no other neighborhood can claim as their own because we invented it right here.

🍮 Tres Leches Latte — sweet cream, vanilla, light caramel. Latin American dessert in espresso form. The one that converts people who say they do not like lattes.

🍚 Horchata Latte — cinnamon, rice milk sweetness, subtle vanilla. Smooth. The crowd-pleaser. The East Village version of everyone's abuela's kitchen on a Saturday morning.

🍍 Piña Colada Latte — tropical pineapple coconut brightness. The most photographed drink in the East Village this summer. Order it iced. Post it. Watch people ask where you got it.

🍬 Mazapán Latte — almond, honey, warm nuttiness. Inspired by the Latin American candy that shows up in every Latino childhood. The most uniquely 787 Coffee drink on the menu — the one that makes people stop mid-sip and ask what they are tasting.

🥃 Rum, Whiskey and Tequila Infused Lattes — non-alcoholic. Farm-grown Supremo Roast soaked in Don Q Puerto Rican Rum, whiskey essence, or tequila essence for 48 hours before roasting. The East Village loves a drink that surprises people. These are three of them.

The community.

The best coffee shop in any neighborhood is the one that belongs to it. 787 Coffee belongs to the East Village in a way that no other coffee brand can replicate — because the East Village is where we rebuilt from a hurricane. The people who walked through our door at 131 East 7th Street in 2017 and 2018 funded the recovery of a Puerto Rican farm they had never visited.

They are still coming back. Their kids are coming now too. The East Village did not just give 787 Coffee a location. It gave us a reason to stay.

The Award. The Farm. The East Village.

In 2026 787 Coffee was officially ranked #3 Best Coffee Shop in New York City by The World's 100 Best Coffee Shops — the most rigorous specialty coffee evaluation on the continent, evaluated by 200+ professional judges and 200,000+ public votes from 4,600+ coffee shops.

The only coffee shop in New York City ranked above us is one we respect. The dozens ranked below us are ones we admire. But the ranking that matters most to us is not on a global list.

It is the regulars at 131 East 7th Street who have been ordering the same drink every morning for seven years. It is the East Village neighbors who told their friends when we were trying to find our footing. It is the community that decided we belonged here before we were certain of it ourselves.

The award confirmed what the East Village already knew.

787 Coffee belongs here.

Every bag plants a tree in Puerto Rico. 🌱☕

Every Bag Plants a Tree in Puerto Rico

When Hurricane María hit in 2017 the East Village held 787 Coffee up. Every cup sold on East 7th Street went back into rebuilding Hacienda Iluminada.

Today the farm is thriving. And through the One Bag One Tree program — every bag of 787 Coffee purchased plants one real coffee tree at Micro Lot 2026 on Hacienda Iluminada in the highest mountains of Puerto Rico.

The East Village helped plant the first seeds of 787 Coffee's recovery. Every bag you buy online or in any of our East Village locations continues that story.

Your cup. Our farm. Puerto Rico. The East Village.

All connected.

From 787 Coffee — The Farm Behind Every Cup

787 Coffee is officially ranked #3 Best Coffee Shop in New York City and #32 in North America by The World's 100 Best Coffee Shops 2026.

We own Hacienda Iluminada — our family farm in Maricao, Puerto Rico at 3,000 feet above sea level.

Less than 1% of coffee shops in the world own a farm. We do.

The coffee tree you plant when you buy a coffee bag grows in the mountains where the story began. The cup you drink tomorrow was harvested by hands that care about every single cherry on every single branch.

That is not a marketing promise. That is a seed in the ground and a double espresso in your hand at 6am before the city has figured out what day it is.

You already knew this coffee was different.

Now you have the bag to prove it.
